Navman ICN 520 in Northern Ireland

My new Navman ICN 520 PRTEMIUM arrived last week and what a great little toy!

While I live in Scotland, I’m from Northern Ireland and go back there often. I was therefore extremely disappointed to see that apart from about 80% of greater Belfast being covered, the street map coverage outside Belfast is appalling and Navman could probably be held against the Trade Description Act by offering a UK&I map set!

Let’s face it, about 70% of people working in and around the Belfast area every day, live in the suburbs: - Newtownabbey, Carrickfergus, Bangor, Newtownards, Lisburn, Antrim, Ballymena Craigavon, Portadown. None of these large commuter towns are covered with Street maps. People living in one area, probably want a SatNav to help them find their way around other suburbs.

It is the 21st century and I can’t believe places like Lerwick with a population of around 18,000 has street level maps and a large towns like Newtownabbey or Bangor with over 100,000 are not covered to street level.

Has anyone, any idea what and if Navman are planning to do about this?

I don`t think Navman have any plans, I echo everything you said. I too have a 520 and although I live a bit further south, I too nip home now and again. home by the way is Carrick, how about you, you mention that area.

Unfortunately Navman cannot fix these problems. They have to be looked at by the mapping company, in Navmans case Teleatlas.

Thanks for the update.

The bad news is that my Mother asked me to order a 520 for my fathers Christmas, which came in at the same time as mine did. I’ve had to break the news that apart from the M2, A8 and A2, no street mapping exists east of the M2/M5 intersection towards Whiteabbey and Carrick.

I was brought up in Carnmoney and left NI in 1996 on relocation to Scotland. Bloody job took me back in 2003 and I hated nearly every minute of it. It is a strange place to go back to once you’ve left. Anyway, to cut a long story short, it sometimes is great working in the IT industry because I got dragged back to Scotland in September this year and I feel home again.

The 520 is great up here. Apart from the new motorways and endless round-a-bouts they keep building up here the wee 520 works a treat. Its first big test is a trip to the far side of Edinburgh tomorrow. I’ve not researched the destination at all, just programmed it into the 520 so I’m at the mercy of the new woman in my wife. I’ve still to give the voice a name.

I have to blame Teleatlas now. I must serf over to their website and see that is happening.

I travel back and forward between Manchester and Northern Ireland and there doesn't seem to be any Belfast street level mapping past the Knock carrageway like Tullycarnet area, Braniel area, fourwinds areas and the Bangor areas don't look to informative either, bit of a con if you live in Northern Ireland.

Yeah, Hi , I am from norn ireland but travel to england a lot and wanted a satnav for donkeys so when i was over at xmas 2005 my brother-in-law had the navman520 i thought it was brill so took my £ 250 with me to halfords and bought it was bloody brill in england couldnt wait to get it home... I live in Tullycarnet but according to my navman its a green field and i had to go to the nearest road, so i did i went to the main road and drove to newtownards... no coverage apart from main road, my son lives in millise and according to navman its a field with a strip of blue water, took it to junction 1 at antrim today, again only main rd to antrim nothing else no streets nothing, feel slightly cheated thought it would be good for my new wife as she is english and moved here to belfast and has difficulty finding places even thou its been 3 yrs rofl anyways lot of strrets n roads missing .. but as i go to england a few times a year it will still get used .. and there dont seem to be any POI for norn ireland either.. looked about on websites and google nothing at all, lot of the surrounding areas do not exsist its awful...

so i emailed navman ;-) here is the emails and replies...

Â·Â Navman state coverage on the side of the box, so there will be missing streets. Streets change on a regular basis (one-way systems, traffic lights, new roads.

Â·Â Roughly 10â€“15 % of the road system characteristics change each year. Because of these constantly changing traffic conditions (construction of new roads, traffic calmÂing, etc.) we unfortunately cannot guarantee that the digital road map will be in 100 % agreement with existing traffic conditions. We recommend that you always use the most current version of the map CD for navigation.

Â·Â You need to bare in mind that it takes time to update maps:

1) a user reports to Tele Atlas that there is a fault

2) Tele Atlas sends an engineer on the field (it takes time to free someone and send him on the field)

3) the engineer takes measures (couple of days)

4) the engineer enters the changes in the database (Time consuming process)

5) when enough data has been updated, Tele Atlas releases a map update (1-3 updates a year)

6) Navman buys a map update

7) Navman reformats the map data to make it compatible with its software (very fastideous)

8) Navman releases the updated maps

9) the distributor buys the maps

10) The retailer buys the maps

11) The product stays in stock until a customer buys it.

12) The customer has the product

Hi guys.
Sorry to hear you are having so much trouble with NI mapping.
Just thought I'd let you know about a mapping problem in England.
I first reported a mapping error to Navman who blamed TeleAtlas.
Then reported it to TeleAtlas who blamed Navman, saying that it is up to Navman how much map data they make available to their customers.
I find that one extremely odd (and unsatisfactory).

Hi Tim.

My report was concerning an instruction to turn right off of the A23 Streatham High Road (whilst travelling southbound) when, in reality, you have to turn left and go round a one way system to enter the road in question (Leigham Court Rd).
This could easily put people in the wrong lane if they are not familiar with the area, then they would have to cross three lanes of irate drivers to make the left turn.
This has been the case for thirty years that I know of, and is clearly signposted as a 'no right turn'.
Just thought they should know as both Navman and TeleAtlas seem to be 'resting on their laurels'.
