Hi, I`m sorry if this seems a daft question but I am new to this GPS and pocket pc`s and still finding my way.

I recently bought myself an ipaq 2210 with the Tom Tom Navigator 2 bluetooth gps which I have been getting along with ok. Now I have been given a Navman 4400 bluetooth gps as a gift. My question is could I load both the Navman and Navigator software onto the same 2210 with maps stored on an SD or CF card and alternate use between either one or the other? Or would this cause a conflict having both programs on the same pda?

No you can't, probably the best thing to do is to hand the Navman 4400 over to me and I'll give it a good home!

Actually you can happily install TomTom and Navman software onto the same storage card. I have CoPilot, TomTom, Destinator and Navman all installed to the same Pocket PC and they all work well together.

If yuo have 2 GPS recievers then in theory you can run both applications at the same time. However in practice I dont think running 2 street routing apps would work very well.

I havwe had TomTom 1.5 and OziExplorerCE both running on the same PDA at the same time. This worked well, but was somewhat pointless.

Hi,

I am sorry, but why would anyone want to install two or more mapping systems on their pda, how many can you use at once!

If one had to then would it not be better to load them onto different memory cards.

Phily, we certainly do for testing compatibility, but some people find that they like one GPS application in general, but find some areas of the country quite bad, and may switch to another. I guess if people want to spend the money on two products, they have the right to install 2 or more products at the same time.

You don't need to install to different memory cards. Think about PC applications, most PC applications are different than each other and don't use the same directories or registry keys. Do you normally install each application to a different hard drive ? Or to the same one ? I'd think the latter, Pocket PC's are no different, so in most cases, you shouldn't have any issues installing it to the same card. Personally from a testing point of view, I reached about 20 GPS applications on one Pocket PC before seeing a problem.

Dave

I understand that you have to have different mapping systems for testing and we all appreciate the good work that you do.

If you have more that one system, do you have to have different gps receivers or just use one. Does it mean that one only has to buy maps from different companies.

Sorry I am new to all this and the thought of adding a second mapping system to my 4400+2210 sounds interesting.

In most cases phily, you can use the same GPS Receivers, or chop and change between applications. 90% of the time you're not locked to GPS Receiver A with Product A. If you change software you have to go with different looking maps, e.g. Navman's software/maps are different than TomTom's. The maps usually come with the software, but sometimes you do have to purchase extra country sets.

My thanks to Dave and everyone else for the advice.

I now have the Navman software & maps loaded on my 2210 along with Navigator 2. The only problem I`ve had is if I open the SmartSTpro first it seems to have difficulty receiving the gps data from the 4400. For some reason SmartST keeps closing the gps port, and when I reopen it I get "no gps data". I have to open Navigator 2 which locks onto the 4400 seemingly ok (although Nav 2 is set up for the Tom Tom wireless gps), then close Nav 2 and open SmartSTpro which then receives gps data from the 4400. Both the Tom Tom gps and the 4400 are set up as shortcuts in the bluetooth manager, and I select a connection with the 4400 before opening the software. I am guessing that there is something very basic that I`m doing wrong - I just haven`t worked out what it is!
