Delay in locking in to position

My TT5 works great other than it takes up to 10 mins to find and lock in to its current position at start of day. Even when I turn it on again from the same position that I turned it off at (the next morning) it takes up to 10 mins to reestablish a location position.

Hoping someone can help

Steve, Welcome to the forum, what car is this being used in (does it have athermic glass) and what is the hardware specifically the GPS unit - Mike

Yes, its not easy to give advice if one doesn’t know what Hardware you are using. However, your trouble is almost certainly the GPS receiver. My GPs receiver is a BT338 and that will get a fix in seconds even if I have not used it for a week. The new receivers are so good these days.
By the way, if you enter your Hardware and software info into your profile future viewers will see immediately what gear you have. If you look at mikealders reply and mine you will see what I mean.

Mike, Trevor - thanks for your rapid replies.

I'm using a Loox with a (fairly old now) Haicom HI303E sat receiver plugged into the flash card connector. I don't think I have a problem with reception as, once it's working, I can pick up many (>6) sats consistently at good signal strength.

This hardware used to work fine with TT3 but then I didn't use it for some time and then upgraded to TT5, so I can't tell whether the GPS receiver has deteriorated or my TT5 installation is to blame.

However, after a few trials I've found that if I disconnect and then reconnect and start up TT after only a few minutes then it can find the current location after only a few seconds. From this I must assume that the last location is stored in the GPS receiver and not stored on the PDA. Is this correct? If so then I suspect my best bet is to replace my GPS receiver.

Is my logic correct?

I am not 100% sure if the last fix information is stored in the GPS receiver but I should imagine so. A good way of finding out the state of your receiver is to try someone else’s receiver. If you have a friend that owns one, indulge him in conversation, buy him a pint and ask to borrow it for an hour. If it makes a significant difference, well, you then know what you have to do.

Your receiver contains a battery which enables it to retain some of the satellite data, making start-up next time much quicker. If that battery is on the way out, it will lose all this data in a short time. If the battery can be changed by the user, that may be the answer

Thanks to everyone for their help. Solved the problem now and thought I would close this trail down for the assisance of others. The sat data (or part thereof) is definately stored in the receiver and kept alive by a battery (duff in my case). If I power down for 30 mins or so then the receiver remembers where it last was; if I power down for 8 hours then the receiver has forgotten its last position and needs to start all over again.
