When we visited CES in Las Vegas earlier this month we saw a large range of new devices that Globalsat ware preparing for the market. One of these was a new Personal Navigation Device (PND) appropriately designated as the Globalsat GV-201.

This new device has similar specifications to the original Globalsat GV-101, but it is far smaller, and has much better styling. Gone are the CF interface and the external BT Handsfree module. Bluetooth hands free is now built into the PND as standard.

Featuring and ARM920T processor running at 266MHz and 32Mb ROM 32Mb ROM. The screen is 4 inch diagonal with 65536 colours and of course it touch sensitive. It also has an internal Lithium-ion battery and mono loudspeaker. There are also 3.5mm sockets for external headphones and microphone. The main feature of the device is of course the SiRFstarIII GPS Chipset which is by far the most sensitive GPS chipset available today. Should you have a car with a coated windscreen then there is a socket to connect a MMCX active antenna.

Based on the Windows CE.Net 4.2 platform the navigation software provided is Netropia IntelliNav, as featured on the Globalsat GV-101. There is also an MP3 Player and a Digital Photo viewing application.

Dimensions are 135mm x 90mm x 24.8 to 29.4mm.

Globalsat announce the GV-201 All in one GPS System

Available from February 2006 the GV-201 is a complete navigation and entertainment system in a single package. Based on the tried and trusted Microsoft Windows CE operating system, the GV-201 incorporates leading edge technology from SiRF combined with legendary design from Globalsat produces an evolutionary, stylish all-in-one SatNav system.

The GV-201 has an impressive specification:
· Samsung 266Mhz processor
· 320x240 colour TFT LCD touch screen
· SiRFstarIII high sensitivity GPS chipset
· Built-in Bluetooth handsfree car kit
· Netropia IntelliNav navigation software
· Europe or North America mapping
· MP3 Music player
· MP4 Video player
· Digital Photo viewer.

The GV-201 is ready to direct you to your destination within seconds of switching the satnav on. Simply select where you want to go with the easy to use touch screen interface and within seconds you are ready to go. As you drive you are given clear voice instructions indicating the turns to take.

Whilst you are stopped for a break in your journey you can listen to music or watch a movie. If others in the car are sleeping then you can use a headset to listen in private.

Paying attention to the road and traffic is important. Using a mobile phone in you hand is illegal in some countries and not advised elsewhere. The Globalsat GV-201 had a built-in handsfree car kit. Just pair the GV-201 to your Bluetooth phone and the GV-201 becomes a safe to use handsfree car phone. You don't even need to take the phone out of your pocket...

To complete this feature packed satnav system there is the design and style of the device. The GV-201 is not only functional it looks good too. The control buttons are easy to use and help you move around the system and select the functions rapidly.

The Globalsat GV201 will be distributed by www.easydevices.co.uk in the United Kingdom.

The thing that makes me nervous about this class of device is the lack of updates.

Navman will sell you their latest SmartSt for the 510/520 (will they install on the others?)

The Mio Map software that comes with their 136 is fairly old now, where do you buy the next version? (it's not listed on their euro website)

Same with the Medion/Navigon clone ?....

Will this be the same?

Looks like they are trying to copy the Nuvi with all those features. It will take a very good attempt to better it I would imagine.
