You can also try the Garmin i3 (for £99 only if you can get your hands on one). Less bells and whistles but perfect for the purpose and best value for money.

Thanks for the suggestion, but Computer Shopper puts it at the bottom of its group test this month, saying "let down by its terrible mapping....the software updates so slowly that we often missed the next turning before the i3 had updated to show the previous turn, making it useless in town". See

I wouldn't take that as a valid opinion, the press rarely provide reviews of GPS that are worthy of consideration.

The i3 is a good if basic unit.

Bought a TomTom one just over a month ago and have to say that it is excellent! People have been mentioning issues with SD cards etc but I have had absolutely no problems.

The minor issues are as per the review, the power cable socket on the bottom of the device being a little tricky to locate (although you do get used to this quite quickly and find it easy now to plug it in) and the power light being on the top, although I can always see it via the reflection in the windscreen and there is an on screen warning when the power is low.

The screen is excellent, easily visible in all conditions and the speaker easy to hear on the motorway.

Would be nice if the traffic info came in via FM (and therefore cost less to use) and there is the occassional minor map error (assuming the next update to the software will cure this).

The One is great BUT so is the Garmin i3.

The Computer Shopper review isn't fair - I have owned both and although I have kept the TomTom One - the i3 is a fantastic device. Don't be put off it and remember that you can get an i3 for £99 compared to £250ish for the One - CS clearly made no allowance for price etc.

Hi,

Early in January my Tom Tom ONE stopped working. I could not switch it on.

I called the helpline and all that was needed was a push of the reset button on the bottom of the Tom Tom.

They did explan that the Bluetooth interface can cause the Tom Tom to lock up.

Hi -Tom Tom One requires a free update to the present version 5.420
I bought mine around Christmas time (like a lot of us seem to have done)
but a friend bought his a couple of weeks ago and it still had the older data base.

The firmware version has no relation to the map data version.

Hi - completely new to this and doing some research as we want to get one for my dad. He would use it in UK only, and dont think he'd use it for handfree mobile phone control. From reading the reviews and forum posts on this site it seems like there would not be much difference between the Garmin i3 and the Tom Tom One. Given that there is a price difference of at least £80 between the two - is there any reason to get the Tom Tom?

I can see Maplins doing the i3 for £159 on special offer but can't see it anywhere for under £100 - is it still possible to pick one up for this price?

Thanks,

Dan.

Iposted on Usenet just a moment ago on this very subject. If you can live with the smaller screen and lack of touch screen UI then the
Garmin i3 is a great unit.

Personally whilst I could cope with the smaller screen I didn't get on with the input method and much prefer a touch screen interface as it makes address entry etc much much easier. For me the additional £80 is more than justified for the ease of use the larger touch screen adds.

Hi I'm back with what I hope is the answer I screwed up on before regarding the TTOne map version -- It's v605. Well it is on my One!

ive got a garmin i3 and tomtom one. had been using the garmin for work, but found the wheel took to long to keep moving up and down to write my destination (im a courier with 60+ drops aday) so i got a tomtom one as i had a company tomtom go in my last job and know how quick i can get through the screens on it.

Probably sell my garmin, however it is a great unit and i would reccomend it to anyone looking for a cheap and cheerful unit to get them about and certainly an excellent set of POI's from MaFt and pocket gps for it.

Hi

Another beginner here....more or less sold on the Tom Tom One to replace terrible Blumedia 6380 :x

Specifically, has anyone used the One with US mapping? Seems a convenient way to do it by just loading new card.....

Can you do similar thing with the Garmin i3??

Off to Florida in a few weeks and as we travel around a fair bit it would be useful to have sat nav I can trust...

Cheers
