More than 12 million motorists have been caught by speed cameras since they were introduced, contributing to a quarter of UK households having at least one person with a speeding conviction. 19% of males and 12% of females have points on their licence for speeding.

According to the RAC 1.9 million people were caught on camera for motoring offences in 2003 alone (the latest full year available at time of writing).

Have you been caught on camera and fined yet? Take part in our poll above and let us know your thoughts below on the following:

If you deliberately speed, why do you think you've got away with being caught for so long?

If you've been caught and think you didn't deserve to be, why not?

If you've been caught, and you think that you deserved it, why were you speeding?

Hi there, my name is Dennis and I have a problem (they say admitting it is the first step) Laughing

I was speeding, got caught and deserved it. I was very late for a meeting at a hospital but this is not exactly a valid excuse is it.

However, this was two years ago and since then, I have not had any additional points Wink

I too was caught speeding, some 9 or 10 years ago. It was by a vascar as opposed to a camera and at the time I thought I had mitigating circumstances but, on reflection, I was probably more likely to cause or be involved in an accident. Considering I was doing 48 in a 30 zone (albeit at 00:30) I think I got off very lightly with 3 points and a fine (can't remember how much but it was a fixed penalty, not a summons).

Since then, I've hopefully put a lot more thought into where I exceed posted limits, and consider not only the road conditions but also my own frame of mind. I probably exceed at least one posted limit every time I drive but have been points-free since 2000, when the incident mentioned above became 'spent'.

With luck, judgement and observation skills I intend to remain so, too.

I got stopped about 10 years ago doing 106 in a 60 (in a brand new diesel laguna to see what it could do - ffs) at 6am on an August Sunday morning. Copper on a motorbike.

Went to court and got £250 fine,6 points and 14 days ban.

Driving licence came back with no points but a DR10.

Phoned DVLA who admitted they messed up the DR10 should have been an SP50.

Returned licence, licence came back with SP50 and still no points.

The hardest part was the 14 days of walking.

Ever since, I stick to the limit as best I can.

The magistrate possibly did you a favour - after a ban, your points are wiped, althought not any endorsements.

Is that true??

I'm sure I spoke to somebody a while back who got a ban for speeding but also got 6 points. They were definitely not taken off after the ban.

This is certainly what I was told, but I concede that it may be that they are only removed if the ban was as a result of 'totting-up' .

Been done twice now. Both SP30's. Got to admit it has changed my driving style as there is no way I want another. Don't want to have 9 points and be constantly worring about accidently going over the limit, getting zapped and being banned.

Never been done by a camera. But have been pulled twice by the police with radar/laser guns. But that was some 5 or 6 years ago for the last one. more than 10 years before that for the first.

I have been caught speeding more times than I care to admit, but never near a school or in a built up area. It is always Plod who catch me on open and clear roads not a pesky camera!
Speeding is good as long as conditions are good and you do not put anyone at risk. I have just bought a 4X4 to try and slow me down but it hasn't worked? BMW 3.0D (with DMS uprade) what an engine!
If you want to move quickly try the M6 toll road, the inside lane was moving at a ton the other day, and I managed to do the whole length on the limiter at 155mph! Laughing

If you're not joking you should be banned for life and your car crushed.
