Hi all,

Got a TomTom Go 700 for XMas and was really happy with it until the other day when it just started to randomly reboot itself (ie full reset) while navigating with it in the car. The updating icon with the moving arrow would appear in the top-right hand corner and then, after a few minutes, the map would start to slow right down until it eventually stopped and then the reboot.

Keeping an eye on it I noticed it was only doing this whilst it was performing a traffic update via my mobile phone. I noticed that it seemed to reboot mostly in poor reception areas for my mobile. When I called TomTom they told me to free up space on the hard drive which I did by deleting most of the voices, as it could be due to the drive filling up with the traffic download. Unfortunately today it happened again. But it was again in a bad mobile reception area.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Thanks all.

I have started having the same problem.

Exactly as described, I would send TomTom a question but I can't access the my question history part of the website.

Sounds like its trying to access a duff bit of HDD, and causing it to reboot.

That's what I thought at first, either that or a memory problem, until I noticed it happening in bad mobile reception areas.

It's not restricted to the 700. My 300 does it too. In fact I had my 300 repaired/replaced by TomTom recently for a different problem and the replacement exhibits the same behaviour. Suppose we have to learn to live with it.

Pete D - How much spare space do you have on your SD card? It needs at least 1-2 Mb free otherwise it does that, especially on long journeys.

Also, have you tried cleaning the contacts and re-seating the card (mine did it occasionally until I did that, since then absolutely fine, it's not re-booted once since.

Rico - sorry, no ideas for a 700, though Crying or Very sad

Andy,

Thanks for the suggestions.

SD card space is not an issue - I have two high quality 256mb backup cards each with 114mb free. It happens with both of them (and also the original 128mb TomTom supplied card with no POIs etc added.)

Even when the unit was brand new the Traffic reboot problem was occuring so I don't think there was an issue with dirty contacts at that time.

However, the card reader on my original TTG300 recently failed hence the replacement unit that I mentioned in my previous post. If you think reboots are due to bad contact then maybe the reboots I was getting were symptomatic of the impending failure of the card reader. That seems plausible. (Prior to replacing the whole unit, TomTom had originally replaced my SD card to eliminate software corruption or a physical problem with the card itself. That didn't help in the slightest.)

The fact that my replacement unit is already exhibiting the same problems is a bit disconcerting.

Getting back to the original post though, all the above doesn't explain why it only happens when Traffic is enabled so I personally suspect a software bug.

Pete

Currently an old SE T68i and Vodafone PAYG.

Also happens with Ericsson T39m and Nokia 6810.

While we're talking about Traffic - I drove up from Slough to Leicester this PM and couldn't access the server all the way. Anyone else had problems today? It's working fine at the moment.

I had the problem again today and when it happened the first time this morning I couldn't get any satellites at all, even though I was on a bit of the M25 where I've never had any problems.

I've also noticed that when the reset occurs, I lose the correct time on the TomTom and have to reset it.

As for the amount of free space on the device, I have just over a gb now.

Still waiting for a reply from support so I'll let all you guys know what they say.

Ta.

Rico,

Please could you post your response when you eventually get one? TomTom usually respond but sometimes give generic responses that don't address the original question - but when you've got something, please post.

I've been experiencing this issue myself on and off. The likely reason why you couldn't access satellites is that the unit appears to freeze when it's trying to get the traffic update.

What I have found is that when you switch the device on, it briefly (and I mean milliseconds) finds a location near to your current position and then looses it. It then tries to download the traffic update and focuses on that before addressing the GPS signal. Thankfully, I was caught for 10 minutes in a queue at traffic lights but by the time I got to the lights, the unit had just triangulated it's position!

Generally, I don't switch on my mobile's Bluetooth facility so it doesn't usually cause a problem but when I travel on a longer journey, I do. Sometimes, it works ok, others less so.

Anyhow, I'm interested to hear what TT have to say. For the moderators - could this be related to the Bluetooth stack issue that TomTom users have had on PDA's?

Cheers

S

I too have been having intermittant problems with my TomTom unit resetting during traffic updates Sad I have just bought the new TomTom one after using TomTom on my Ipaq for two years. The idea of traffic updates is brilliant and was well pleased with it.

I have a Nokia 6230 on Vodafone and when I have auto updates everything is fine for an hour or so, then when it is updating the update icon shows in the corner (arrow circling the car) then the unit resets. If I leave my phone connected then the same thing happens on the next auto update.

Interestingly if I use my motorola razr phone and Virgin sim I get no crashes. I have even tried my Vodafone sim in the Razr, but the crashing still happens.

I assumed this was an obscure problem unique to my combination of gadgets, but it looks like it is happening to different TomTom units and on different phone networks.

Anybody any ideas?

Phil.

Hi all!

TomTom support replied and told me to update the software to the latest version (which I'd done when I got it back in December anyway) or to return it to the shop.

I told them that other people on this forum had also experienced the same problem and if they thought returning it to the shop was a good idea as it may not be the device that's at fault but the software.

I'll let you know what they say.

Rico670,

Gald you have heard from TomTom, although I am a little confused at their response, why do they suggest returning the unit to the shop if it is the software that is at fault, surely the problems will be the same on the next unit?

Phil.
