Can anyone recommend a decent mdern smart phone which could replace my current Samsung D500 and IPAQ2210 running TT5 with a TT bluetooth receiver. TomTom is excellent on the PPC but I will soon be replacing the phone and was wondering if now is the time to dump the PPC and go for a mobile all in one solution maybe even with a built in GPS receiver. Any ideas?

Depends on your preference of screen size and feature needs. I went from D500 to Orange svp C500. An excellent phone and runs TTM 5.0 very well. I have also installed TTM on the updated C550 though this requires version 5.2. But from there I spingboarded to the rich feature set of a PPC/phone with a bigger display. For this I chose the T Mobile Vario (a good deal at the moment) which is a medium sized device. This runs TTN 5.2, installs and runs flawlessly. A nice touch is the way the TT application activates the devices bluetooth on startup. Not too big for the shirt pocket but I list slightly to the left due to the weight.

I don't really want a pocket pc sized phone due to the size and weight. Do Nokia or Sony do anything with a sybian operating system maybe?

from nokia theres the n70 though for nokia you could go with route66 or navicore as other options

Also worth considering the new SPV C600 - updated version of the C500 with WM5.0 and improved screen.

Hey why dont you go for the XDA,that runs tomtom with no problems, and will give you the pocket pc option....other wise i would go for the Nokia 6680,as the N70 has a lot of problems with tomtom

Vodafone themselves now sell their version of the qtek 8310/i-mate SP5 and is called the v1240. Someone on contract might easily upgrade to that for free...

But if you phone up refer to the new qtek smartphone and not the new Vodafone model number because most staff haven't a clue. If you get nowhere say it's a smartphone and someone will sort you out.

Don't know if it runs TTM5.2 yet though.... trying to decide on this or a Nokia N70 at the moment. Mainly dependent on new cradle for car kit for me.

Ive got a Sony Ericsson P910i with TT5 and it works really well. I've not had any problems getting a bluetooth GPS reciever (Holox bt-321) to work, unlike some machines running Microsoft software. As a phone it's really good as well, the click wheel makes navigating through the menu really quick. Theres no problems syncing with MS Outlook either.

I picked mine up for free with a cheapo contract from o2. You have to make sure you get the correct TT version. It's the UIQ version, not the Symbian one, thats for nokia's

I just got a T-Mobile MDA Compact II (HTC Charmer) which I am quite pleased with.

It has a 320x240 screen but it's size is something between a candy bar phone and a PDA. It takes full sized SD cards and runs Windows Mobile 5. You can get it on the "web and walk" tarrif with 40 Meg of GPRS included for £22.50 x 18 months.

It's about half an inch wider/longer than the D500 but slightly thiner.

Samsung D500 - 94 x 46 x 24 mm
MDA Compact II - 108 x 58 x 18 mm

Orange have a M600 (HTC Prophet) coming out soon, same size but with WiFi.
