I suppose the MOT has a database with camera locations, and being the owners of the cameras, they could argue that the location/data of the cameras belongs to them.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think one can Patent\Copyright an idea, (don't need to have a working model) as long the paper work is presented to the Patent Office. |

Yet another argument going around in circles!
It is the compilation which is copyright, not the data - much the same way that in a novel it is the story and not the words. |

So in theory, I could download all the freeware that I want, make a compilation, apply my copyright and charge money for it.

To be honest I don't care about this anymore, if we got to pay, we pay and that's it. If they are any issues is up to the PGPS Team to sort them out.

Yes - provided you have permission from the owners of the copyright in those freeware programs to reproduce them. A computer program is a creative work and is protected by copyright.
But in the case of the speed camera database we are talking about data or "facts" rather than creative works. A single fact like a camera location is not protected by copyright no matter how it is expressed - as the idea is neither original nor creative (much like some of our forum members  ). However, a compilation of facts in a systematic way where there has been substantial investment is protected by Database Right which is related to but different from Copyright.
The contents of the database must also respect any other rights such as copyright or database right. So PGPSW are only on shaky ground if they have incorporated all or part of another database that is protected by Database right. If you submitted a single camera location you have neither copyright nor database right. If you submitted, say, 1000 camera locations arranged in a systematic way (so not individually) and made substantial investment in collecting and validating the data and a substantial portion of what you submitted was used THEN you might have some rights.

Two questions,
What makes a previous contribution to the database more valuable than a new one ?
ie
1 contribution before the deadline equals free subs for life
1 contribution after the deadline equals one months sub!!
Not only will it be harder to make a contribution but for just one months subs the incentive is very low.
Secondly as PocketGPS ia a Limited company will all profits be ploughed back into the company? |

It might be a good idea if the management now listed the 'members qualifying for life membership' or at least contacted the individual members, and started the 'new member's forum'.
We would then know where we stood regarding membership! |

I am presuming that if you submitted cameras and became a forum membr before the deadline then this means you qualify.... |

Anybody who submitted a camera before the deadline whether a member or not is entitled to free membership.
We are currently getting the subscription forum code into place. When this is done we will let you know and will start enabling the database contributors.
