Hello

I am looking for software that will run on my ipaq 5550 with Navman GPS Sleeve, that will record a continuous speed distance curve (rather as a tachograph would on a coach or HGV) and gradient profile for a journey from end to end. The output could either be as a line graph or data from which one could be constructed (say in Excel). I have searched the forum to this end, but am rather confused by the terminology of 'tracks and waymarks' and have struggled to work out how to record and output positions, speed and elevation automatically and continuously (or at least very frequently - say every few seconds) without having to 'ask' the software each time.

Many thanks for any assistance...

Charles

What you want to do is simply record the $GPRMC messages from the GPS - they contain all the information you need, and are delivered once every second.

There are a few data loggers out there, both software and hardware (for example the DeLorme BlueLogger).

After you collected the data you will need to massage it to convert the comma separated format into something useful, to calculate distances etc.

Chuck, You will need a good quality GPS unit to work in a train, most of the new ones have thermal glass (Tripple glazed) and the receiver will stuggle to attain a lock once aboard the train, this is further compounded by the station roof, overhead HV cables etc. I have used my unit a couple of times out of interest and found it to be hit and miss, the older trains are easier - Mike
