Hi!
I have recorded all the sound files into my Tom Tom 510 GO of my son reading the commands.
However, there is no place to choose this file set on the device.
Can someone please walk me through how to save this voice as it's own thing?
Or can I have only one custom voice at a time?
I have been able to transfer all the audio to me PC, but I've noticed that the voice files on the TomTom are only like 3 files, but I now have 56 wav files.
I have checked out a guide on the net, but it seems to be for older devices as it lists 59 files, and besides the compiler just crashes.
So, hopefully theres an easy way to do this on the device itself so that I can choose my son among the Cleese, Darth Vader etc.....
Thanks,
Frode |

Are you using v7 software?
IIRC there was no "built in" method on v6 software, you had to do it using the method described (beautifully) by Graeme Lucas HERE. Worked fine and producewd a set of voice files just like any other custom voice.
On v7 software there is a method to do it on the Go itself (Preferences / Voice Preferences / Record voice).
The first page says that you will be recording 57 words and phrases, so neither of your numbers matches up.
Don't worry about the fact that the supplied voices are only a few files, that is what the compiling process does in the old method.
On v7 you then have the choice of using one of the normal voices (including any extra custom ones you added OR the one you recorded (Preferences / Voice Preferences / "enable recorded voice"). Be aware though that you can only have ONE voice recorded this way.
So, overall, there is no reason why you can't have your other custom voices AND your son, but we need to know how you went about recording it as the result will be different.
I've just tried the record voice function on v7 and I'd advise trying that if you can, as it takes you thorough the process very easily. It doesn't produce individual wav files though, as far as I can see at a
(very) quick glance, the voice elements are stored in a file called "clmdata". |

Certainly not on my 910. _________________ Richard

Drat. Should have checked that on THE LIST
In that case, frodebass, how have you done it if you haven't used the techniques in Graeme's instructions? |

You are missing 3 files although some may never get used on your device depending on your settings (eg "Metres" or "Yards").
The full set of 59 files is detailed in the guide by Greame Lucas in Andy_P2002's link above. You should be able to work out which 3 are missing by looking at the list under "1. Preliminary" in that guide.
The files need to be ogg files, not wav files. You could use Audacity to convert them. Again see Greame Lucas' pages for details. |

Follow the link in Andy_P2002's post above. This will take you to Greame Lucas's site which describes the method in great detail. |

|

I managed to follow Greame's instructions to create all the voice commands in my daughters voice. It all works great except the pic that I saved in BMP does not show up when selecting the voice.
The BMP file name is just the same as the other 2 files created except it ends with .BMP
What do i need to do for this to work? |

Is it the right size and shape?
I've never done this myself, but here's the relevant part of Graeme's instructions:
Quote: | Creating the bmp file (not essential)
You have now created the two files and are ready to create your bitmap.
The bitmap can show anything you wish, however must be exactly 160 pixels wide and 160 pixel high. It must also be called the same name as the .chk file (for example data99.bmp). You can use any type of paint programs, but the simplest would be 'Microsoft Paint'.
Once you have your three files you are now ready for the final task, copying them to your voice folder on your memory card.
c) Copying the three voice files to your memory card:
Locate to the root directory of your TomTom memory card, simply copy the three files into the following folder, depending on what version of TomTom you have:
TomTom5: Copy to the folder 'Voices' located on the 'root' of the TomTom memory card. |

Yes it is the right size and in the format required. File names are same too. I have followed the instructions correctly but no joy.
Is there anything else i need to do? |

OK I've just tried it and there are a couple of things I found.
First, and most obvious, you have to use a genuine bitmap image (I didn't bother to read the instructions properly and wasted 10 minutes trying to get a .jpg image to work. (So you can't just use a .jpg renamed to a .bmp either, it has to be a genuine .bmp - sorry if that's obvious to you, but best to mention everything.
Second, I did get the image I tried to work, but there was quite a bit of confusion over the name etc.
I found thet to get everything working properly, I had to use the NEW format for the .vif file that TomTom have come up with.
Instead of the 2 lines of text in the old one, the new version has SEVEN, its described in detail HERE
I found that if I did everything there, and named the .vif file "data71.vif" instead of "person's_name.vif" everything worked, including the bitmap picture.
Hope that helps.... |

Check the file extension make sure it is .bmp and not .bmp.bmp this messes it up - Mike |
