WAAS/EGNOS

Hate to revive this old chestnut but..... I was using the unit after I had swutched off the GPS so that it had defaulted back to Normal GPS. I noticed I was passing side streets before the unit showed me there. I changed it back to WAAS/EGNOS and the accuracy definately improved. I know this is theroetically impossible as it has been noted that EGNOS is not working yet!!!!
Anyway, I am off to Moinnesota on the 24th and I will give a report on how the I3 works when I get back.

EGNOS is working kinda sorta, but they still have the test flag up so you are not allowed to use it for life dependancy tasks.

WAAS on the other side (of the planet, that is) is already live since a while, and if you walk slowly enough and face south you may actually get it in Minnessota.

waas works really well in the states..it came in handy whilst geocaching with my 60c handheld in california in april..got down to 2 foot in places...as ibenlin says egnos is on and off in the uk while they test it...

I agree with zogman here. I tried getting a WAAS fix while I was in New York and the Quest locked on with full 3D differential data for all 10 visible sats within a few minutes. That was from a cold start with last know fix being Heathrow..... 8O

EGNOS is a pile of crap in comparision. I can stand on top of a hill with a clear view in all directions (eg, I get 12 sats locked iwthout WAAS enabled), switch WAAS on and it either takes ages or it won't get a 3D Diff lock at all. Something isn't right with EGNOS - it was supposed to go live about 18 months ago wasn't it?

stella, i leave mine on normal - it's accurate enough for me seeing as it locks onto the nearest road whether you have it on egnos or normal. if you run off batteries they'll go quicker with egnog turned on due to it having to check extra receivers.

also, as skippy said, the eggnog system is still not fully functional...

all this talk of egg-nog has made me hungry, i'm off for my dinner now ;)

Oh yeah, MaFt is right. The disadvantages are that WAAS uses more computing power and therefore the unit may be slower (updating the map/calculating routes) and the batteries may not last as long.

My experience is that using i3 in this mode is usually preferable. Battery life isn't an issue for me, as I always run it on the fag adaptor...

As usual - best advice is run the same route with one, then the other mode enabled - and make your own mind up! 8)

Agree with Aitch. Just today I was on a slip road by (almost underneath) a motorway when the GPS locked me onto the motorway and started going mad with recalculations. I stopped switched it to EGNOS for the first time since having my Garmin 6 months ago and voila, I was back on the right road very accurately. Really impressive and I am leaving it on that setting.
