Connect a Garmin GPS unit to my Laptop

Hi folks
Thanks for all your info re my Medion PDA. I have now decided to jump in with both feet and go for a Garmin GPS (I would appreciate suggestions for a suitable model) and connect it to my Laptop.
I will use the GPS as a stand alone unit. In addition I want to connect it to my Laptop and use the GPS unit to give me realtime map positions on my Laptop. I also want to use it as a road navigator, using downloaded maps (Dubai area Middle East).
I have an LG Laptop running Windows XP Pro - that's all I have. I need a blow by blow list of equipment, cables, map software, etc,etc and a suitable Garmin GPS. The reason I have chosen Garmin is they seem to be the leaders in GPS technology (If you think I am wrong tell me). Also the Garmin website seems to be very informative, with easy to follow product information.

I have just written all my needs as above - can I now throw in a Googly (that's a Brits cricket term). If I get an GPS recieving antenna, and suitable software, can I use my Laptop as a GPS unit?
