hi
i remember seeing on here a problem with some peoples mios 168. the problem was about the charging unit where it became loose etc. i also had this problem with mine.
whilst reading that topic there was a telephone number in there.
well anyhow i rang that number up and the person told me to send my pda to someone in manchester and will fix it under guarantee. so i did.
this was about 3 weeks ago and havent heard a thing.
i have tried finding the topic in here but cant remember what the title was.
can anybody remember?

Hi, I don't have a phone # but the place I sent my 168 to in Manchester was "Comserve Network Uk Ltd", you should do a search for a phone #.

I am sure Comserve Network Uk Ltd has fixed many Mio's without problems but I refused to send my unit to them after they lost it & had no trace of it when I phoned.

Make sure you have all the reference numbers or return numbers to hand.

I am sorry to say but I thought they were very poor & they were very rude on the phone they also fixed the problem I sent it in for but broke the screen putting it back together so I demanded a new unit in the end.

Mine is starting to act up (power socket that is). Is the repair an upgrade/improvement of the connection or is it just a standard repair that is likely to go wrong again at some time in the furure?

This does seem to be a common problem with MIO168s and derivatives.

While I don't know that the following will prevent the problem, it should certainly delay the onset:

Ensure that you press both release buttons fully, when inseting as well as removing the cable.

Also do not have the connector at an angle when inserting or removing.

Spoke to Mio Tech. They said that the repair was not an improved (i.e. better or stronger) connection type, just the normal Mio 168 one so problem could re-occur at some time in the future. They have sent packaging for me to sent it to comserve.

Does anyone know if there is a car cradle with built in power connector so the the connector will not be strained when used in car?

Pity it didn't come with a more conventional power connector (jack or coaxial jack type) in addition to the data sync & power connector. There must be quite a bit strain put on the internal connector strip caused by the weight of the plug & cable (plus possible tention from curly cord) and flexing of the connection due to the vibration it will suffer from when driving on our nice smooth ( Laughing ) road surfaces.

www.brodit.com

Since it is a 'gravity fit' there is no extra strain from any catches as fitted to the cables supplied with the unit. I use one for my MIO 168 and am very happy with it.

My Mitac Mio developed the connection problem after about 8 months, so I sent it back to the Manchester service centre who retured it after about 2 weeks with a new motherboard and battery.

They were efficient, polite and responded to my email queries about the progress of the repair.

The Mio seems much better now and seldom requires a reset (as it had previously because it often froze up). I also find that when I insert the SanDisk WiFi card it recognises it straight away - whereas previously I always had to do a reset.

Hi , I have used a Custom Car Mount to take the strain out of the connector . It also has a speaker built in , if you don't need the amplification i think there are cheaper mounts around . Wouldn't go without this essential bit of kit, my mio was about 18 months old and the plug was getting sloppy , now for last 6 months no probs and can use landscape mode , got mine here ,

A question for Gripp really, can you let me know details of the Manchester service centre as I have cracked the screen on my Mio 168 and I might just ask them for a price. A local place suggested it wasn't worth it an d buying a new one would be better, but a phone call won't cost much.
