Basemaps??

I'm just after some confirmation regarding this basemap concept. I've recently bought my first GPS device (a Garmin Etrex Vista C) Its come pre-loaded with an American Basemap. What does this actually mean? If I lived in America what would I use it for (I actually live in England)??

And is, for example, the European City Select (to allow me to see local street information) compatable with an American Basemap? Are Base maps interchangeable i.e I could buy the European/UK basemap and this become my basemap on the device?

The Garmin basemap is a rough map of major roads on the continent to which it applies. It isn't over-writeable or replaceable. If you have the European CitySelect maps registered to your device, you will be able to download street level maps to your Vista C. It only has 24Mb of useable memory though, which isn't a great deal. As an example, if you wanted the area inside the M25, this would take up about 16Mb without route recalculation data, or 23.5Mb with. I'm not sure if the Vista C supports automatic rerouting.

So to summarise, you can't alter the basemap but you can upload detailed maps to the device.
