I expect it's come up before but I can't find it, is there anyway of deleting selective preinstalled POI categories such as convention centres? The delete POI category only allows me to delete POI's that I have installed.
many thanks in anticipation. |

'Fraid not, it's all or nothing.
The pre-installed POIs are in an encrypted file - (poi.dat) which can be deleted to get rid of them all, but no one has hacked into it yet AFAIK.
I've no idea why TomTom produced such an appalling mix of POIs, some are OK, but many are worse than completely useless ("businesses" for example!).
They could easily update their POI file much more often than the maps but so far don't seem interested.
I'd like to see an update every month or two; or they should release an editor and let others do the hard work for them. |

Thanks for that, I was afraid of that answer, still a list of Dutch dentists or french police stations may come in handy one day. |

It looks complicated but it works. Give it a try.
You can do it all on your PC and then copy the file to your TT. So either the new POI file works or it doesn't - no harm done.
Create a couple of temporary directories. Copy your POI.dat file into one of them and use the utilities for pulling out the data into the other.
Change as appropriate (but be aware that you are contravening the TT terms and conditions if you change part of it rather than all of it).
Use the utilities to recreate.
Copy it back to your TT (having backed up your TT first for safety).
I tend not to use the TT POIs as they are so out of date but the 27 limit for your own additions is becoming a nuisance.

DeeSee,
I can extract the data from the poi.dat but not create a new one.
"The system cannot find the file specified"
What command are you using to create? _________________ Ray

Sorted.
It can be done. As stated above due to copyright you can't alter the original poi.dat file but you can make a new one with your own ov2 files. You do however have to use the original poi category names and icons so this will limit your options.
If like me you don't use the inbuilt pois at then you could delete the original and make one with just a few pois in (petrol stations, cash machines, car parks, hotels etc) to get over the limit of 27. _________________ Ray
