Just out of interest, is anyone having intermittent problems with satellite reception on their i3 whilst driving, when there doesn't appear to be any good reason ie no trees or buildings nearby?

Hi,

Yep, have had same problem. Swapped to external magnetic atenna with a mcs adapter (around £20) now get all green bars on signal strength..

Reason for change ? - vehicle had solar windscreen and would only see 1 bar (red) at best with unit in corner or near edge of screen.

Going to try Garmin's idean of enabling WAAS reception to solve hanging.

Thank you for your reply.

I have an antenna on order from ebay. Excuse my ignorance, but what is the best way to install and place an external magnetic antenna.

I too will watch with interest on peoples progress with WAAS.
Fingers crossed!

Hi,

I've been told by local dealer to find a place where the 'external atenna' has the best uninterrupted view upwards.

It was suggested to place underneath my plastic bumper using permanent scotch pads and then seal around edge with silicon to waterproof, then to run cable back thru baulkhead thru wiring loom gromet (obviously very dependant on vehicle), sealed with silicon as well.

Alternatively, to place on roof using magnetic base (and seal with silicon) and run the cable down the external windscreen trim into the engine compartment and then as above.

This is based upon a van with a solar windscreen. Trying to locate arieal inside the windscreen (ie near edge or by rear view mirror) still only gives 3 out of 5 on signal meter. Outside I get all green bars

Hope this helps, Gary

I am very interested in the new i3 but would need an external antenna due to UV windscreen on my clio.

£70 for the official garmin product has put me off, how are you guys getting it for £20 and will it work?

cheers

Funnily enough, I have a clio and the reception is intermittent, which seems to cause a few problems with navigation (but im sure this would apply to any sat nav??). Still awaiting antenna from ebay, and will keep you posted about performance. Everything is trial and error at the moment but I am sure that I will soon have a consistent and accurate sat nav experience. No regrets with purchasing i3, just need patience and fine tuning...............

Couldn't hack paying £70 for Garmins, so have installed compatible after market antenna with matching connector and now get all green bars on I3.

Sourced from local ICE dealer who specialises in satnav. Cost £25 and I get to deal face to face with experts, also I can take it back if any problems

Along with new sw release , the i3 is now behaving much better

Can it not go inside, on the external parcel shelf, a la "Road angel"??

I have a 1999 RXE. No news yet as unfortunately I am having a hard time with an ebayer (haven't received antenna yet).
Anyway I was reassured the other day that it is the Clio windscreen that was the problem (and not the i3) as a hire-car I used gave me a full reception at all times.

I also found this website quite useful

Its just bad luck that the Clio has these problems. Ill keep you posted how I get on with antenna when I finally receive it.

Cheers

Finally resolved ebay issue and received antenna for £12.

Only place on the car to recieve 5 bars is on the roof (but thats to be expected I suppose). So ive attached receiver magnetically on the roof and run the lead down the gasket lining between windscreen and passenger door. This is probably temporary measure but works effectively and is discreet.

Its amazing the difference in performance between intermittent 2/3 bars and 5 bars all the time

Ill keep you posted..................... Smile
