Make sure it has not been saved as Splash Screen.bmp.bmp as windows can do this if you have not un-ticked Hide extensions for known file types, Click on the Tools menu in My Computer then on the Folder options then the View tab & un-tick "Hide extensions for known file types".

Can't cut a quote but also definitely 220 x 176 pixels in size.

It's a new unit V8 map and latest software version was downloaded from the Garmin site yesterday

You say that you have downloaded a thundercats splash screen but it still shows the original splash screen, but if the thundrecats was named exactly then it would overwrite the original.

I downloaded the Thundercats image by selecting "Save picture as..." from this site and using the image programme downloaded it to the i3 - unlike all the other attempts with my images it appeared to download (I saw the progress bar and it completed).
I switched the i3 off and then switched it back on again and no Thunderbirds, just the original screen. I did not get any error messages with this image!

I have downloaded the original i3 screen to my laptop - just added a small amount of text and saved the .bmp file - I tried to upload to the i3 and it says its no good!
The images I have tried are definitely the right size and dimensions but they simply will not upload, I have even switched off the file extensions bit in Tools as you suggested.

The image software only gives me two images as options to edit, the Screen Splash and a Screen Shot and I have only tried the splash image.

Hope this is not the Beta firmware version 2.81 as this as now been withdrawn due to all sorts of things happening to the i3, if so download the version 2.70 firmware.

Please check that the image is:

220 x 176

72 pixels per inch

24 bit

113 KB

And it is saved as Splash Screen.bmp

Then try again

Looks like my problem might be that I can't get the image below 75 dpi, even though I set the resolution at 72 - comes out at 75 dpi every time. Maybe need to use a different image software.

Try PAINT.NET, this is a free download which is a good replacement for paint from microsoft. You will also need to download .net framework 2 which is on that page as a seperate download or bundled together.

Looking into this a bit more I don't think that this is the problem, as some Splash Screens are 96 pixels per inch. And I still think it is something to do with how you are saving it. As I said before, if it was the same save name as the original it would overwrite it. Here is one to try, just right click on picture & save picture as then save it as Splash Screen .bmp Load it to your i3 & it should work. By the way have you saved your original Splash Screen to your hard drive as any picture will overwrite the original.

Downloaded your dog and changed to .bmp with correct title and it downloaded onto the i3 no trouble at all - clear picture of your dog on my i3.
Did a simple 220 x 176 blue square with identification text on it and saved as a .bmp with correct title.
Downloaded to i3, got progress bar to completion, switched it off then on again and low and behold ............................ the original i3 splash screen!

It must be the way you are saving the photo in Photosuite 4, It worked when you loaded my picture but when you added text it did not work.
I have never used Photosuite 4, I always use Photoshop. But because it does not work when you add text, then if your program is like Photoshop then you will have layers, ie the picture of say the dog then another picture of the text, you will need to flatten the image,( combine the two pictures into one) then save it as Splash Screen.bmp
