How good is Sirfstar III? I have heard people say that it is good enough to get GPS reception in cars with Athermic windscreens. Does this mean an aerial is not required? |

Correct. SiRF III should be able to work through any athermic windscreen. _________________ Lutz

Well I used the 236 GPS in
The glove box, under the drivers seat, in the boot and in my house and I got a solid lock most of the time. A vast improvement in the receiver technology I would say, it all depends on the hardware it is surrounded width as they are a bit of a difference with some of the SiRF III devices I have used. _________________ Regards

TomTom ONE and RIDER, for a start. A few BT receivers, too. _________________ Tim |

I notice a lot of the new all in one units are starting to use Sirfstar III. Garmin are now using Sirfstar III, having previously used non sirfstar hardware. The new Garmin Nuvi has Sirfstar III. |

I've tried SS3 on Virgin trains new Pendolino and Voyagers which have tinted windows. However, even though I had good signal lock for at least 15 mins before entering the train, I soon lost signal lock shortly after boarding the train. This is despite siting the unit as close to the window as possible with good view of the sky. It is strange as I have used SS3 On most other trains and aircraft with smaller windows with no problems! |

I've just purchased an SS3 device (Haicom 355 CF SirfIII - with SD slot) and am awaiting it's arrival tomorrow (as promised by supplier!)
However I currently use a GARMIN GPS35HVS wired mouse in the car. This will give me locks on 3-4 sats when I forget to remove it from the car boot! The only clue that I have forgotten to attach it to boot of car is that it takes 2 mins to get initial lock - it's usually 10-15 secs.
I've gone for the 355 unit as it will enable me to use it as a sort of GPS mouse in the car (and on boats about twice a year) and I can choose to use it directly in the iPaq for walking/biking when I want - much better than the handheld GARMIN GPSII+ which is a very reliable piece of kit and has been over many miles on bike and foot, but is a mess of cables trying to use it with iPAq. I only need to turn it on every now and again to check location.
I am looking forward to the WAAS/EGNOS functionallity of the unit. Will post later with my first impressions of this device. |
