Hallo, I have been reading through forums here and reviews, initially I thought I would be going for the TOMTOM300 unit as it gets a lot of praise and anyone I have spoken to about sat nav almost always says that TOMTOM is the way to go.
However, I have read that the Garmin I3 is BETTER than TOMTOM although it is half the price!
I understand the screen is smaller and it doesnt have touch screen like the TOMTOM GO but apart from that does TOMTOM have any advantages over the Garmin unit to justify spending double the money? or vice versa for that matter.
Alternatively if there is a product I have completely overlooked and someone would like to reccomend please do.
Thankyou for any input
Johanna

And don't overlook the TomTom ONE announced today.

So for an extra 70-90 pounds you would be getting a better reciever, bigger screen and touch screen, just read your post about the ONE, would be getting used in different vehicles anyway because of my job so the docking station isn't really an issue.
Do you know if it will actually perform better than the Garmin ? or is it just extra 'features' ?

That depends what you mean by 'performs better' ? For the extra I'd prefer it personally for the touch screen UI, access to Traffic and the other TomTom features. But at the end of the day its personal preference.

The ONE is a SiRFSTARIII device which is an important and welcome update.

Thanks for the info.
It's certainly more tempting than the £360 TOMTOM300 unit, also it has traffic updates which I assume would be connected to your mobile ? and would cost so much per min ?
decisions decisions Laughing
At the end of the day though, all I'm really bothered about is how good/fast the routing is as it's for a truck and it's easy to miss turns due to being in the wrong lane and things like that, I've seen a system in operation before, not sure what it was but as soon as you missed a turn it would recalculate the route in no time at all, it was on a PDA though...

TomTom's routing has always been fine for me and recalcs are rapid.

For me the custom POI Support would make the ONE the one (excuse the pun) that I'd chose of the two.

of course it's not available in the UK until early next month anyway!

Thanks again
I assume the maps that are used in both machines are just the same, or at least as up to date as each other, for new roads/junctions ?
