Can I suggest the following parameters when using GPSBabel if you wish to view on Google Earth:

gpsbabel -i nmea -o kml filename.gps filename.kml

This will create a Google Earth compatible kml file which will automatically load up into Google Earth if double-clicked.

If you just want to view the text, right-click the file, choose "Open With", and choose notepad.

Not as nice as something that plays it back through Google Earth, of course...
