Xemics chipset Bluetooth GPS - not working properly?

Hi all,
I've got a Qstarz BT-Q775 (http://www.qstarz.com/html/products_BT-Q775.htm) Bluetooth GPS unit. It promises that it is an 8 channel unit, and that it is sensitive enough to work from within the dashboard. However, when linked to TomTom Mobile, only 4 of the channels appear to be used. Also, the unit needs to be directly in view of the sky - it won't work from elsewhere.

Do I have a faulty unit? Or, (more likely), is it just that its a cheap thing? I'd like to get the 4 extra channels working if possible, as the reception in TomTom is flaky at the best of times.
