OS Grid references from POI edit ??

Forgive me but I'm just a Newbie on this one !
I have set up POI edit on my pc and have successfully updated and downloaded to my 6680, OS grid references from PGPS. To check it , I found on multimap the grid ref of my home location and tried to type it into the OS grid refs in my Tom TOM mobile 5. The grid ref is 2 letters followed by 6 numbers but it only lets me put in 2 letters and only 2 numbers (if I'm lucky)
All in all, not very satisfactory !
