help on first purchase of a gps

i hope i am i the correct forum , and i hope some one out there can help . i mainly want the unit for hiking , i was also looking to be able to download explorer maps to the unit i am not to bothered about a electric compass . i am also not sure what base map is on a unit and whether i need it , my budget is around £150.00. thanks

You can get a cheap Garmin like the Etrex or Geko (don't get the base model 101) and it will give you your OSGB position so you can figure out where you are on the map. You can also create a route on your PC using OziExplorer (or similar mapping product) and upload it to the GPS and it will give you directions of how far to go and where to turn.

You can't download non-Garmin (eg OS) maps to a Garmin GPS unit. If you want to use the OS maps then you need something like memory map and a PDA (which is probably well over your budget).
