I agree, not much difference in the settings and unlikely to make a difference to your routeing. But it is only a device and you are bound to get some anomolies, but yours sound worse than others.
Although, GPS devices are great (in my estimation) and mine takes me where I want to go and only occasionally tries to take me on a scenic route, you have to use them intelligently and not follow the instructions blindly. If I go on a long journey I usually look up the route from a paper map first just so that I know roughly where I am supposed to go - if Mabel tries to take me elsewhere, then I just ignore her and she quickly comes to heel and calculates a new route, which is mostly where I want to go. It's a balance thingy _________________ Gee-Pee

The iCN520 comes with a memory card on which the mapping for the region of the country in which it is sold is installed. Does the device work at all? Can not the donor of this device give you the discs and memory card? I guess you will have to buy the CDs with the maps and a memory card, but you need to know if the device is working first...
Have a look on Navman's web site where you can download a free Manual and that will tell you all about the iCN520 and what should have been in the original box. The same site will give you an idea of the cost of the discs and memory card....is it worth it?
See HERE
Sorry to be so negative.
