GPS to generate maps?

I am new to GPS and am looking for a handheld unit that:
Calculates area in square feet and acres.
Generates maps by downloading to a PC. The terrain is very hilly, rural and map accuracy does not have to be survey quality.
B/W display is fine, low cost is good.

Guessing that I would need a CD package too for topographical data.

Any ideas?
