Hi,

Just asking, has anyone ever had there tt and/or mount stolen out of the boot?

yes my was stolen from morrisons in nottingham i put it in the boot under a carpet and they waited until i left the car and knew where to look Crying or Very sad

Did they force the boot lid or smash the window (if youve got a hatchback)

No i have a laguna they poped the central locking with a screwdriver very little damage to the car

When I take my TomTom out of the car I make sure that any body looking will see me remove it from the car.

There are lazy scumbags around who hang around car parks watching what people put in the boot of their cars.

One day I will most likely get mugged for the TomTom and then wish I had left it in the car.

If you have something they want, you cant keep it safe whatever precautions you take.

When reading the various TomTom forums there are more and more reports of TomTom 300, 500, 700 units being stolen from cars even though they are hidden in the car boot, glove box. The mount gives it away and the thief breaks in to find the unit. This is on the increase with the new units. Do you have any plans to incorporate a password access facility similar to those found on mobile phones?.
I have the 700 and feel that this would help. I have even heard of the unit being taken by a thief reaching in and taking it from its mount whilst the car is at traffic lights. I think this will become more of an issue very quickly. Many thanks David Tolley.

Yeah there support is rubbish - i've not yet heard from them regarding registering the serial number as stolen.

That reply is terrible - maybe some of the mods in here could bring some 'pressure' to bear regarding this issue. Certainly makes me a little nervous regarding buying one of these awesome units for the grief it can bring on me.

All it would need is a serial number cross check but nobody is interested. It's not mine as mine had a non standard sim card and a case.

Why would TomTom be interested in helping with the recovery of stolen units. Ultimately, whether your insurance pays or you pay, they get to sell another unit, adding to there profits.

Everything I have read here about TomTom support seems to be disappointing. What a shame that they can not back up an excellent product with excellent support.

I've been so concerned about this that I bought a car safe from ebay last week. I think I got lucky because this model (an Autosafe) is normally almost £200 but I got it for under £40. However, there are cheaper models around.

It's locked in my boot with a thick steel cable going through one of the welded steel tie down brackets. It's also big enough for my laptop if I need to leave that in the car - living in the Thames Valley it's a seriously big problem round here with so many IT companies in the area.

How much you're willing to spend depends on your own past experience and risk profile - for me £40 seems a fairly small price to pay.

So working this one through - the thief sees you place the item in your boot. He breaks into the boot - how much damage is then going to be likely to the car?

I know this is an emotive subject but I'm getting the feeling there's a lot of pent up agression here - no need to take it out on me!
I have to admit I have a bit of a bloody-minded streak in me - anything that p*sses off one of these scumbags for a minute is money well spent in my book. We can't just accept that this is how life has to be and retreat into our little fortresses or inconvenience ourselves at every turn to avoid it. They are the criminals, not us.
