Well, I hope there’s no reason to panic here.....

I bought the TomTom Navigator 5 HP iPAQ rz 1710 kit without really researching the market properly. It was only when it arrived that I realised it needed constant power from the cigarette lighter attachment to keep running. As I ride a motorcycle and don’t have a dash to put it on, I need a self contained unit that runs under it’s own power. So what I decided to do was purchase a new iPAQ (an HP hx4700 that’s an altogether better job and has bluetooth) and also invest in a bluetooth BT 338 receiver that also runs under it’s own power. That way the two units are self contained and don’t have to keep worrying about the wired GPS unit, which doesn’t seem to run without power from a cigarette lighter accessory.

What I had intended was to keep the software and reuse it in the new hx4700 iPAQ and re-sell the new but unused rz1710 on ebay and cut my losses that way.

So far so good, but now when I put the TomTom Navigator SD card into the new iPAQ there’s no reaction.

What do I have to do to get the software to work in the newer iPAQ ? Also is there a method of backing up the SD card? So I can use a back up and keep the original in a safe place in case of damage? I tried copying the card to the pc and then copying it back to a new card, but when I tried to use it, I got an error message telling me that there are no maps? Any ideas?

May I thank you all for your replies....and I certainly hope I haven’t got to throw it all away and start again.......Oops.

On the 4700 the feature "Autostart" may be disabled, therefore nothing happens when you insert the SD card. (by the way, the SD card needs to have a folder called 2577, otherwise nothing will happen anyhow)

To backup a SD card make sure that your PC file explorer is not hiding system files or extensions. Otherwise you may think you have copied everything but in reality you just copied what is visible.

As for swapping the program over - there's also the licensing aspect. You can install the software on another PDA after seven days (and then every half year). But when you sell the 1710 again you need to remove all software (including TTN) from it's storage medium.

Lutz, thank you for your help. Funny how you see things clearer when someone points the way........

Having slept on this, I think the best thing I can do is to box up the rz1710 again and send it back for a refund. The 4700 is a much better bet and the bluetooth a much better idea than dangling wires everywhere on a motorcycle. TomTom do a Navigator 5 Bluetooth kit which is much cheaper than the 1710 kit and probably the way I should go.

Well, instant update. I’ve just phoned the supplier and they seem happy to refund me on the rz1710, especially since I’ve ordered the bluetooth kit as replacement.

I might just come out of this smelling of roses after all:>)

Once again, thank you for your good advice which solved three problems all at once..........

Chris Carson...........
