I'm trying to get my geko to display UK OS map references - 6 digits.

I've changed the set-up to British, but i get two references in the same format, two letters followed by 5 digits.

I maybe being dumb, bit bear with me.

OS references with 4, 6, 8, or 10 digits can all refer to the same position, but the larger number of digits allow for greater precision. The first half of the reference gives the northing and the second half gives the easting. Geko uses 10 digit references. To get the equivalent 6 digit reference omit digits 4,5,9,10. To convert 6 digit to 10 digit pad with zeros in the middle and end, although this will not of course increase the accuracy of the position!

Doh! How dim of me, I'll return to my damp stone! I get the first two letters (TQ for example), what are the second pair (BN in my area).

On my Etrex Venture I get the grid code (TQ in your example) then the 5 digit Easting on the first line, and BNG (for British National Grid) then the 5 digit Northing on the second line.
So I suspect that on your Geko the BN is just a shortened BNG. I'd also expect it to be the Easting first, then the Northing, though I'm happy to be told I'm wrong on that one!

Hi Everyone, When I first had my etrax, I played about with the settings, I could only get a 5 digit map reference, so I sent an e-mail to Garmin, and this is their reply:-

To use your GPS with Ordnance Survey maps of the UK you need to
change
the position format of your GPS to BRITISH GRID and the map datum to ORD
SRVY GB.

The position will then look something like this:

SU 37733
BNG 20529

SU The 2 letter reference for the 100km grid square;
37733 The Easting, to 1m resolution;
BNG 'British National Grid';
20529 The Northing, to 1m resolution;

If you require a 'normal' six figure grid reference, simply round off
the last two numbers on each line; this will give 377205.
