What is this and can I move it?

I have a haicom gps receiver and where the cable connects to the iPAQ there is a large cylinder-like object attached to the cable. This is in a really inconvenient place - can I remove it completely or move it further down the cable? What is it anyway?

It sounds like a ferrite bead.



I have two Haicom cables, but they're both PC ones (a 9 pin serial one and a USB one). Neither has a ferrite. As they cost money, I guess it's there for a reason.



A ferrite helps block high frequency signals. It might be there, for example, to filter out high frequency noise from the power supply.





You may get away with removing it - but removing it may cause your Pocket PC to crash sometimes through unwanted signals getting in via the cable.
