They claim to have employed a team of students as data collectors to collect the data. Make of that what you will. 6000+ locations in a few months. Possible I suppose at a push.

Of course there are other ways of getting your base data ;)

Why don't you employ the methods of the map makers, place some deliberate errors in the database that only you know about and then see if they appear in the TomTom database. Wink

That’s good. How long does it normally take eBay to remove the items?

Not only can we play "Camera Spotters", we can now go "eBay spotting". I’ll go and grab my anorak!

Regards,

Laughing Out Loud, I reported the sites on Saturday morning and had confirmation that they had been cancelled this morning. If they re-list or list similar items again they risk account suspension Smile

See Steven Gourlay's post on the previous page, that was one of the three he reported.

Thanks though. It does mean we're making headway Smile

Guys - why don't you just start charging for it? I'd pay £4 a month (£1 a week) to keep the points off my licence.

It's something we'd rather avoid if at all possible. We're going to monitor the PayPal donations, if they generate a decent contribution to running costs etc for the server that hosts the database then we'll be happy.

Just checked Ebay. Nobody seems to be rushing to auction any Speed Camera Databases anymore. Only the three reported earlier are still left.

Perhaps the message is getting through? Laughing

I'm pleased about this, it would be a real shame to have to start charging for it.

Hopefully the offending retailers will follow suit as well.

I agree with TopcaTT. I think the only way to beat these leeches is to charge a nominal subscription fee. This could be linked to a subscription service where you can only download the database from PocketGPSWorld. Another possibility would be to only allow downloads if you are a registered PocketGPSWorld user!

But there's still nothing to stop somebody downloading it once and attempting to sell it a hundred times.
