iCN 520 car charger

I've has a problem with my iCN520 in car charger, it seems to have broken the lighter socket. Before you ask it's not a blown fuse. I took my car to the garage and said that the lighter just "suddenly stopped working" as I've heard they don't like you putting things in the socket that don't come with car. They said a whole new lighter socket was needed. Luckily it's covered under the warrantee. However I do wonder if it will happed again? Has this happened to anyone else?
