Erratic GPS

I have a Rikoline GPS that takes forever to get a fix and sometimes it doesn't get one at all.
I have been told that the Ephemeris or Almanac data may have become corrupted. I have been advised to discharge the back up battery but I do not know how to do this. Is it just a matter of taking the main battery out for a while or what?

Basically, yes. Unless your GPS receiver has a hard-reset function (consult your manual for that), leaving it with a decoupled or empty battery WILL clear it in due time. Remember however, there are quite a lot of receivers out there which have a second small backup battery, which it uses to "remember position if you turn it off for a shorter time". You would want to be sure that battery is empty too of course.

Leaving it without power for a couple of hours should do the trick. After 24 hours, it should be clear either way.
