I'm about to purchase my first ever GPS receiver, one that I'm going to be using for hill/mountain walking. My shortlist is down to two: Garmin Etrex Legend C vs Garmin Etrex Legend C.

Is it worth spending the extra for the digital compasst that you get with the Vista? I already own a 'normal' compass and know how to use it.

Any advice gratefully recived.

The GPS compass only works when you are moving. The advantage of the electronic compass is that it works while you are standing still.

It's nice to have rather than essential. If you are using the GPS a lot outdoors then you would probably appreciate having one.

One slight disadvantage of the electronic compass is the extra battery drain and if the battery goes flat .no compass ...so you may need to carry a magnetic one just in case ..Another one is with the etrex "C" models, there is no serial port which may not be an issue for you if you don't intend useing it as a gps mouse. or to connect to a device with no USB port
