How often are maps updated?

I'm very new to tomtom, only had it a few days. I've noticed my uk map has some faults on it. For instance tomtom tried to send me the wrong way down a street which was made one way about 3 years ago. Also the new bypass ( SDR in Newport, south wales ) was opened last summer but isn't on the map, and the M49 between the New severn crossing and avonmouth has a strange kink in it halfway along which makes it look like I'm nowhere near the road.

How often are maps updated?

New maps for PocketPC and PND type devices are generally released yearly.

Although a map may have been released in Dec 2004 the data it contains can be anything between 18mths and many years old because of the time it takes to capture the map data and convert it etc by the mapping companies e.g. TeleAtlas and Navteq.

Naturally new map data must be paid for when it is made available.

Thanks for the reply. I suppose everyone just gets used to the maps not being up to date, a fact of life!.
