I need to get the France Plus file on to a new CF card. It is currently on my pc.

Activesync is having none of it. So have borrowed a card reader. Can locate the card in explorer but it is saying that the card is write protected.

There is no switch or toggle on the CF card. The card is a bytestor 512mb hi-speed compact flash

How do I solve this?

Many thanks for any help,

Hmm! - that's an interesting one. Never experienced that in several years of using CF's.

Does your PPC read and write to the card okay?

If it does, then there may be a PC operating system glitch. Try restarting your PC with the card in the reader as there may be a detection or driver error. Failing that, see if you can format the card - do this in the PPC using Softwinter Storage Tools preferably - you'll find it in the downloads section http://pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=17

Try a different card to see if the same error occurs. If so, then assuming the card is correctly formatted, the PC operating system or device driver may be at fault.

If you resolve it, please let us know what the problem was.

I have now tried a different CF card and that works fine. I have also tried the same card in different pc but same problem.

"Cannot copy XXX. Disk is write protected.
Remove write protection or use another disk."

So it is not the pc. Not the reader. Must be the card?

Put the card in my camera and reformatted the disk ok. Was able to take a photo. Put card back in reader and the photo is there but the card is still write protected ?!? Aaaagh !?!

Not sure where to go from here.

I'm going to Frannce on sunday for 2 weeks driving. Without the France map I can see there being several arguments over who got us lost!

Probablly going to have to buy another CF card at lunch time and try again.

Anyone got any other ideas?

Thanks.

Have you tried the card in the PPC (PDA)? Does it work in there? Have you tried using Storage Tools to access and format the card? There are several avenues to explore before you write the situation off (excuse the unintended pun).

If your camera will format the card then it is not totally write protected. If it was, then the format would not be allowed. Is the camera perhaps write protecting the card after the format to prevent other devices accessing it - check your camera format config.

If the problem persists, go back to the supplier and get the card changed. 512 cards are cheap enough these days for this not to be too big a problem.

They copied the the France plus map on straight away.

Not sure what the problem was / is. May never know.
