Reception with Garmin Legend

I'm new to GPS and just bought a Garmin Legend. Tried it out on a short walk the other day and it seems to work fine when I hold it in my hand, but when I put it in my pocket, or clip it to my belt, it loses satellites, and so no longer tracks my route.

Is this normal? Is reception so sensitive it's blocked by being close to my body? Is there any way round this?

The Legend is a pretty old receiver. Nowadays the newer chipsets and better antennas allow you some more freedom in the placement of the receiver. However, some form of skyview is still required. If you put the receiver in a metal box or next to metal objects (like keys in your pocket) you will see that signal degradation.

It may look cool on the belt, but that's not the best place. Try a shirt pocket, or a backpack pocket.
