Hi all,

New to this GPS malarky and in need of some advice. My Navman 650 works OK most of the time, but on the odd occassion when I power on it takes an age to get a GPS fix, 5 - 10 minutes and then its fine, the worst was midnight Saturday when it took nearly 30 minutes to get a fix, again it was fine once fixed on.
So any clues or is this normal GPS downtime??? or have I got another Navman faulty unit?

You don't say if you were moving or not. If you are moving the GPS will generally have more trouble getting a fix. The otehr thing I have noticed is that windsheild wipers can cause a problem getting a fix - was it raining?

An external antenna will normally improve fix times and is worth considering.

Thanks for that robertn, yes I was on the move and no to the wipers. I have tried it stationary and it seems to get a fix much quicker, think I will order an external antenna as suggested, but £40 (GBP) is a bit steep for what it is! Any cheaper sources anyone?

A couple of times my 630 got its GPS firmware corrupted and was working but only just, with poor sensitivity and ages to get a fix.
Solution is to power up while holding the OK button, then select GPS menu and do a cold GPS restart. After first fix it's fine again.
