GPS position on Map

On the previous version of TT it was possible to get the GPS position to stay on the map, ie the map updated as the arrow got to the edge of the map.

I found this reallt useful on a long journey, switching to the Navigation view as required.

The only way I can see on TT5 is to keep pressing the icon at the top right corner each time the the GPS postion reaches the edge of the map.

Is there a way to get this function back?

No. The Map Browse function is for trip planning only. The only updated map view is the navigation Map which is route up at all times, no North UP option.

Thanks for the confirmation.
Another useful function I miss from TT3 is the ability to map PDA buttons to TomTom functions.
Otherwise I think TT5 is a big improvement

But surely if you go to ‘browse map’ you can see your present position quite clearly. Or are we at cross purposes.

I never used TT3, only TT5, and therefore cant quite understand the problem here. I have TT5 on all the time and it shows me where I am on a map (I have 2D view) even when I have no route planned. It scrolls along quite happily with my position always a bit below centre of the screen and it never drops off the map. Did TT3 do something different?

Just to clarify, TT3 when used with the map view as opposed to the navigation view, used to keep the position arrow on the screen. As the arrow got to the edge of the screen the map automatically redrew to keep the arrow on the screen at all times.
If your TT5 is doing this I would be keen to know what you have done.

If I remember correctly in TT3 You had the option to keep the location in the centre of the screen. I cannot find such an option here on TT5. However, the strange thing is that my son does have the location stay in the centre. I have fiddled with his TT5 but can find no way that it differs from mine in any way except for that one feature. It was like that from the moment he installed the programme. Why, I cannot think.

You are right it is the navigation view I am referring to, not the map view. Embarassed

However given what the navigation view does I am still unsure why you would want to use the map view in the way suggested - what advanateg has it got over the standard navigation view? Just curious I suppose because I dont see me ever using TT3 rather than TT5.

By the way according to the instructions you can scroll the map in map view by dragging it. I can also scroll it using the scroll button on my ipaq. Both are probably easier than using the GPS button on top right corner of screen.

the easiest way to see where you are with out directions is to "clear the route" from the navigation

the map will then just scroll under the blue arrow and never run of the edge of the screen

if you have pois activated they will appear as you drive along the road

Perhaps an example might help
Say for instance you are travelling from London to Glasgow.
TT may plot the route as M1-M6-M74.
I guess that at some stage in your journey you will want to know where you are rather than just blindly following TomTom instructions, possibly to find somewhere to eat or whatever.
In the map view you can see at a glance how far into the journey you are, where the next town is, where the services are, etc
Maybe its just a personal thing but I like to know where I am as well as the directions I should take.
Sometimes helps to find a shortcut as well. TomTom doesn't always get the best route especially if youve just heard about holdups etc on the radio.
Hope this explains what I mean.

OK I understand now. If that is the advantage I am not too worried - more interested in where I am going to than where I am :D . Or maybe a case of not missing what you have never had.
