PostPosted: Tue Jun 28, 2005 5:46 pm    Post subject: SirfStarII GPS and I-mate Jam : Which Com port ? Reply with quote

I have just got the TomTom 5 software for my I-Mate Jam and have installed the software no problem.

The kit came with a wired GPS : Leadtek SiRFStarII
which connects to the Jam via the USB port.

When I run the software it says no GPS device.

I have gone into Specify the GPS and chosen : Cable NMEA,
set the baud rate to 4800
(I have looked on Leateck's site and all it says is set the baud rate to 4800 and do a reset. It doesn't say which port I should be using.)

and then it lists the following ports :
Infrared Port
Com9
Internal Modem
Serial Cable on Com1
Com4
Com5

I have chosen all of them and nothing happens.

Help please.

Thanks Steven,

tried reconnecting using Com5 and baud 4800 but still can't find the GPS.

I tried a soft reboot - no good
Tried a Hard reboot and restore - no good.

Any other ideas ?

Just heard back from hantec (where I got the unit from)

they say serial com port 1 and baud 4800

this doesn't work either.

I also bought an external speaker unit, which just seems to drain the battery from the jam - but it should be charging it!!

Does it take a while for the gps to be found ? am i too impatient ?

Steve,
thanks again. But I've got a wired GPS not BT.

I thought wired would be a better option as I have a BT Handsfree box.

Any other ideas ?

Spoke to Handtec and told them what Steven said "Wired doesn't work on the Jam" and they couldn't agree or deny this.

I have now got to send the wired one back and they are going to send me the tomtom bt gps unit (at an extra cost)

I pointed out that the website offers the wired unit as a package for the Jam and they said that they had sold others with no complaints ??

Thanks for your help on this one guys.
Maybe in the next week or so I can get this sorted

Steven is quite correct, Magician does not support serial connection over the USB connector. The serial profile is not implemented. This applies to all the Magician devices including the I-Mate Jam, O2 Mini and forthcoming Orange M500.
