Is Tom Tom normally slow in getting a fix and a map because sometimes, I have gone five miles before I get a map on my screen? I only got this on Saturday and feel a bit hacked off about this.
I live in Gosport in Hants.

Doug

In normal circumstances the 'fix' time can depend on your location, temperature, weather conditions amongst others.

If you're vehicle is moving when you switch any sat nav system on it will take longer for a fix.

For best results switch on BEFORE you set off. An initial fix will be achieved much more quickly if you are stationary, then when you are on the move it is just a matter of the receiver updating which will be a lot quicker. :D

Thanks, my friend, I will give that a go. Won't return it yet although I am having problems with the window mount and the charging cycle ie I have to wiggle the unit on the cradle to get the charging light to come on.

If it helps, I have tried Navman, and Garmin before I settled for TTG 300. I also had a problem with the car charger, but it wasn't seating properly in the cigar lighter...without some twiddlin'

Do you need the car charger all the time? Battery will last 5 hours.

The first 2 Go's i had were having real probelms grabbing a fix, sometimes taking 10 min. The new one usually fixes within 1 min, but it does depend o nthe car. An aerial definitely helps. If your car has the wrong sort of screen that can act asa barrrier too.

I have once or twice had probelo f along delay fixing o nthe new one.

By and large I'm still very impressed

To emphasise the first reply, I'd say there are TWO things that vastly improve the "lock" time....

1) Don't start driving before it's decided where it is (usually means sitting still for about 30 seconds - if I pull away immediately, it often takes 2-3 minutes to get locked)

2) Always have it switched on when you're driving, so that when you switch it on, it's in the place it thought it was when you switched it off. (if that makes sense!).

I haven't seen point 2 discussed as much as point 1, but if I've not used it for a while and start from a completely different location, I sometimes feel I want the TomTom to have an "OK, I give up, YOU tell me where I am" button! Smile

sure i've read this on another podt and it's also worked for me, if your having problems getting a fix goto Browse map and then find the road your on or close to and it should speed up the time.
crazy i know but i can kinda understand if you turn it off then back on again 500 miles away it's gotta search the whole of the uk.... god it takes long enough 4 miles away.
hope this helps
