Hello
What is the best program to use on a Pocket PC which will work without any base maps scanned in or loaded. In otherwords to make my Ipaq EmtakBT combination work as I imagine some of the basic handheld GPS's do - just to log a track on to a blank screen, display direction bearing & position, record distance etc.
Even better to allow manual logging of waypoints and then give navigational details.
I ask this because I am going to Ireland for a week and (rain permitting) would like to take the Ipaq walking. However I have not scanned all in the maps I require for use with OziExplorer so I will be using the paper maps.
There must be something that allows me to use the Pocket PC anywhere with some functionality as a basic navigational aid (a bit like a Garmin E-trex or something). I cannot see a way in OziCE to do this - incidentally I won't have access to a desktop PC!
Yours
Tim

There are programs that will give you a compass, but none I know of will allow you to create waypoints, tracks and routes without a map. The problem is, how would you utilise them after the effect ? You wouldn't be able to put them down to a map easily, because the scale would be totally off. This is why most of the applications like OziExplorer give you the option of calibrating a map once you've scanned it so you can change the pointer's sensitivity to be more accurate to the map you've scanned. |

I know what you mean - but I was thinking that you could simply insert waypoints onto the thing by way of a list of co-ordinates and it would let you know the distance and bearing from one to the next as you moved.
I have never owned an entry level type garmin but surely that is all they do, and they manage without a base map?

Hello again Dave
I still think that, if there isn't, there ought to be a market for a very basic programme such as I have tried to describe.
However, I have looked into OziExplorerCE a bit deeper and I think I could acheive what I have described using the world map on it. i.e. place a random list of waypoints on the world map and then edit their positions before setting it into navigate mode.
