TTN5 Install Tip (if setup.exe will not start)

Hi,

If, like me, you get an error when trying to install TomTom Navigator 5 from CD that says something like "not enough room in temporary folder" and refusing to start setup.exe the following may help.

My Windows XP PC is on a domain, but I suspect that the problem will occur on any XP-based PC that is used by more than one user.

Check the value of the TEMP and TMP environment variables. You can do this by right-clicking on My Computer and selecting Properties, then Advanced and then Environment Variables. In the top box in this dialog are listed the user-specific environment variables, and on my machine TEMP and TMP are set to C:\Documents and Settings\MatthewN\Local Settings\Temp.

I suspect that the TomTom setup program does not like folders with spaces in their names because when I changed these variables to point to a more conventionally named folder (C:\WINDOWS\TEMP) the setup program started and worked as it should.

Also, it might be a good idea to disable virus scanning when installing maps. My McAfee scanner consumed a great deal of CPU and slowed the map install to a crawl. With anti-virus temporarily disabled the installation went much more quickly.
