TT web site says "You need a mobile phone or device that supports GPRS and Bluetooth. Your mobile phone service should include access to your operator’s GPRS network".

Why does the phone need a GPRS connection?.

Well to use the GO 500 you dont need a phone at all.

But to get full benefit of the features such as access to traffic and weather and the POI downloads then you need to have a connection to the Internet. This is achieved using a Bluetooth Link to a mobile phone that has the GPRS enabled. If you dont have the GPRS then the Internet connection cannot be made.

Thanks for that. Do you need GPRS to use the 500 as a stand-alone handsfree unit?.

I am not too sure about that at the moment. We havent been able to have a play with one yet!!

In theory to use it for handsfree all you need is bluetooth. So it should be OK. We will have to wait and see if this is the case though.

I have sent an e-mail to Tom Tom asking the same question. Still waiting for their reply.
