Hi all!

I have been using TT3 for some time now and had no problems at all - it always seems to send me the right way and has got me from a to b with no hassel at all. It took me some time to trust it but I did get there after only a short while of testing.

Well, I put it to the ultimate test this weekend - we had to go meet the girlfriends Japanese penfriend in London and so rather parking at Brent Cross and getting the tube, I thought we could drive straight into the middle of London and park instead. Oh dear!! Crying or Very sad

So, we did get there ok but on the way back.......arrrrrrhh!! Everything was going well until we came off the end of Tower bridge. It said "turn left" which I did. When we did the turn, there were two lanes going off to the left and two going off to the right. As TT has not said anything else, I stayed going left - that was the downfall of the day! It did re-route ok but after driving through London traffic for 45 mins you can imagine our horror when it had taken us full circle and we ended back on the Tower Bridge again!

Well, when we did the left turn again, we knew to get over to the right this time. We did this and to be honest, everthing went ok (sort of) and it got us back to the M1 and home.

The other problems we had was that because there seem to be so many iron bridges around that area, the GPS kept losing its signal forcing it to re aquire and then re-route. TT3 just got all mixed up and was all over the place!

I noticed this a few times - if there were 4 lanes, TT would say something like "keep right". Problem is you were never too sure of how far right you had to be. For instance, the two left lanes may go left, the middle right lane may go straight ahead and the far right lane would go right so it was all a bit of guess work! Even using TT on 3D mode there were problems. It seemed to be a bit slow catching up with me on the road (it's not normally) and so you couldn't see which way you had to go on the map either.

Ok, thats it, enough of my whining! It really is the first problem I have had and wondered if anyone else had noticed the same while going through a large city. I love the program and have used it without any trouble for so long, guess I was just having a bad day!!

Maybe TT5 has more verbal commands that eases this problem so you know which lane is the correct one - I'd like to know please!!

Lesson learned - I'll get the tube!!

TTN5 has largely the same announcement logic and will be equally vague. I think your problems in London may largely be due to an inferior receiver. The new SiRF III based receivers will perform much better in urban canyons.

I have found this around Bristol and on motoways and now take instuction like this to mean "Don't turn left" I also go with the green direction arrows rather than blindly follow the vioce commands. you can get a better idea of where you have to go by zooming out a little until you can see more of your route .All this mind while keeping an eye out for all the hazzards on the roads that body and wallets intact Smile Wink Thank goodness we don't have to look out for road directions signs any more .Tomtom, for all it's faults I would never leave home without it Thumbs Up

A colleague showed me today an advert for an HP iPAQ 6500(?) which has TomTom installed and also has a built-in GSM phone. The advert claimed that the system would triangulate from GSM base-stations when the GPS signal was lost in an urban canyon.

Yeah, nice advert, isn't it? It still needs to be proven in practice though. With GSM triangulation you can't even nearly reach the position accuracy required to do serious street navigation (although I happily admit that this will improve with 3G networks) . Moreover your current carrier needs to actually support AGPS and/or triangulation. Let's see it when it's out.
