Is there a piece of software that overlays like Checkpoint does that can give details of a journey like average pseed, distances, breakdown of mileage etc for tomtom navigator?

Go to the Home page and read the recent news item about Speed Sentry. I have no experience of it, but it seems to do what you want. You can try it free for a couple of weeks (with restricted facilities...eg disconnects from GPS after 10 minutes) but can obtain a full activation code for $15

You can set TomTom to create a log and then analyse it offline after your trip.
