POIs are done 'as the crow flies' until you request a route. Then the 'obstructions to a direct route' come into force and give you the results you found. (I'm assuming you navigate in Km not Miles BTW).

In your case I guess the obstruction from Harwich to either Felixstowe or Ipswich is the River Stour.

I think it is wise to also carry a Road Atlas so one can see the 'bigger picture' - in your situation maybe Colchester could have been better to look for a Hospital.

In an emergency though I think that asking a local would be the best bet to ensure that you get directed to an 'appropriate' nearest Hospital (ie. has an A&E) and then use the TTG to get there quickly.

Bottom line seems to be keep your options open and don't rely on just one method to navigate - Atlas' do have their uses as well.
