All,

You might be interested to learn that the TomTom website has been updated with new commentary about v5, together with the HP navigation pack that they look to be offering.

There's also the tech specs for the Bluetooth receiver - for the really techies among you, you won't be surprised to learn that it's a SIRF Star III Chipset...

Just follow your nose...

And enjoy...

Got a TomTom Bluetooth GPS MkII here for testing and very good it is too, very similar in performance to the Globalsat BT338.

SiRFStarIII is the way to go, it makes one hell of a difference to receiver performance.

Thanks Darren.

I've been toying between Navigon, Alturion and TomTom for a SATNAV solution but the price seems to be directing me towards TomTom.

My opinion on SATNAV is that it's good but needs a traffic "avoidance" solution to be a real killer-app.

I don't like the idea of TomTom's subscription model, as your obligated to pay month-after-month for the service. Added to that, you've got the data download cost from your mobile network provider too.

For the occassional user, this isn't a problem (but then you'd probably use a Map) but for the road warrior, the data costs could prove to be a bit of a killer.

Navigon (and eventually Alturion) have a TMC solution, enabling free-over-the-air traffic updates, but having seen the prices for Navigon 5, they're really having a laugh! How they can expect someone to shell out €448/£320 for the bluetooth/tmc/gps solution is a little optomistic. It's a massive cost-hike from v4. Navigon also use Navteq data - which is generally believed to be more up to date than TeleAtlas (TomTom's data provider).

So, when you weigh it all up, it's all too close to call. But, when you factor in SIRF III chipset, and greater accuracy, it appears that TomTom is about to win my vote.

Any views??

I drive 30,000 business miles a year and so could be categorised as a 'road warrior' I use the TT Traffic service daily with updates every 15 minutes and my data costs are small, I use roughly 1Mb of GPRS Data on Traffic updates over a month.
