There have been numerous queries regarding ASN and the 300. Some users have reported ASN like effects when satellite lock has been lost and some retailers are listing ASN as a feature of the GO 300.

I can confirm that the GO 300 DOES NOT have ASN, the accelerometers that are part of the ASN system are not present in the hardware and those retailers that list ASN as a feature are incorrect. TomTom have confirmed this is the case.

What you may see when satellite lock is lost is that the map appears to update. What is happening is the unit contunues to draw your location based on the speed and direction you were travelling at when lock was lost. If signal is not reaquired after a few seconds this will cease.

Darren,

So if retailers are stating that it DOES have ASN, and your not happy with the Go300, you can take it back for a FULL REFUND, as it's not as advertised, and not for the purpose intended???.

A very valid point I think.

Very possibly. I emailed Comet who were one of those misrepresenting the product. It will be interesting to see if they change the description under 'Uninterrupted Navigation' here.

I have the original TomTom Go. Can you tell me what ASN actually does? How would I notice whether it's on or off - or whether it's working?

When my unit flashes "ASN" it appears only to be doing what you describe the 300 does - estimating your point based on previous speed and direction.

ASN uses two accelerometers, one for forward movement and one for lateral movement to calculat direction of travel and speed when satellite lock is lost. It's not perfect but better than nothing.

More expensive systems in factory fit systems use a gyroscope and data from the speedometer input to do the same with greater accuracy.

It's intended for use in tunnels etc.

Full marks to Comet, they responded this morning to thank me for pointing out the error and to confirm that it had been corrected.

Why does the TomTom 300 have the icon for ASN ghosted out? Surely it shouldn't be there at all if it's not present?

Presumably because they all share the same software base I guess.
