I had the same problem with AS not working (In my case 'USB device nor recognised'), bur IR and BT working. Turned out to be a faulty connection between PPC (5545) and cradle, and it seemed, a known problem at HP. Repaired under warrenty, and no more problem.
I've now got a 5550 thanks to HP who gave me a new PPC after 3 faults in 7 months with previous 5450. After a few weeks started to get the same problem, but this time it turned out to be just some fluff inside the PPC socket. Once I blew it out with some photographic canned air it was fine.
I remember it being very very frustrating. Best of luck
